Early Signs of Opioid Addiction


The beginning signs of opioid dependence include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Slowed Breathing
  • Slurred Speech
  • Requiring more frequent dosing
  • Concern about making sure the prescription is filled and always on hand
  • Increased pain

Early signs of withdrawal are:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Loss of appetite
  • Craving for the drug
  • Runny nose
  • Sweating
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

*Withdrawal is dangerous and life threatening.  It can happen when you miss a dose or it can happen while you’re taking the prescribed dose when your body requires more of the drug.

For those of you who have are taking opioids, today is the day to get help.  Detox involves a short hospital of detox facility stay (8 to 14 days) where you will be made as comfortable as possible as your body gets rid of the toxic effects of these drugs.  Please NEVER do this on your own – it MUST be medically supervised.
